To'An : In the Taalen language, the Way of Spirits, from Toh way, and An spirit.
Currently, I am moving information from the old blog to this site. Because of the way the old blog worked, this is quite a task, and may take a while. Or not - once I really get into it, it may go quickly. Please be patient, and be prepared for pages to appear, disappear, and change.
In a nutshell, the Way of Spirits, To'An, is a modern Animist tradition. Animism is often described in terms similar to these, from Wikipedia:
Animism (from Latin anima "soul, life")refers to the belief that non-human entities are spiritual beings, or at least embody some kind of life-principle.
Animism encompasses the beliefs that there is no separation between the spiritual and physical (or material) worlds, and souls or spirits exist, not only in humans, but also in all other animals, plants, rocks, natural phenomena such as thunder, geographic features such as mountains or rivers, or other entities of the natural environment. Animism may further attribute souls to abstract concepts such as words, true names, or metaphors in mythology. Animism is particularly widely found in the religions of indigenous peoples, including Shinto, and some forms of Hinduism, Buddhism, Pantheism, Paganism, and Neopaganism.
A better description might be something as simple as this:
Animism is the belief that the world is full of People, only some of whom are Human. Counted as Persons are animals, the features of the land, plants, forces of nature, insects, and ideas. To an Animist, the entirety of life is rooted in relating to the People around them.
To'An is a unique tradition, not established on a structure similar to other Neopagan traditions, and emphasizes personal responsibility for one's spiritual progress, ongoing maintenance of relationships with important People, creating and finding one's own Path through the world in the company of like-minded folk, and self-reflection and communication with the People, all towards the goal of living a materially, emotionally, and spiritually fulfilling life of happiness and prosperity.
Currently, what's up about To'An is pretty dang sparse - I figure better to start with empty than wait until I get the gumption to fill in the articles and pages, since the lack of articles and pages on a live site may help give me the oomph to get started. Still as you visit, there are a couple of places to look.
You can look through the archives of Among The Trees, the blog where I explored some concepts and lore about the Way of Spirits. It hasn't been posted to in months, and this site will be taking its place, over time.
House will eventually discuss one of the central features of the Way of Spirits, the House, which is sort of cognate with the coven, grove, or circle, in the sense that it is the central organization and community. The similarity ends there, though, as the House is intended to be larger (up to 300), less secretive, and immensely more community involved.
And of course, there's the Forum where you can jump into discussions and ask questions.
Other websites that I find useful or interesting are listed over there at the bottom as well.
